Aurelia Aerospace has moved certification of its next-generation turbofan into the first half of 2028 after endurance testing revealed accelerated wear on high-pressure turbine blades under sustained hot-and-high operation. The programme had been targeting the final quarter of 2026.

The manufacturer said the finding came from a rig campaign designed to compress a decade of severe-environment operation into several thousand hours. Blades from two of the three test engines showed coating degradation earlier than the model predicted.

What has to change

Aurelia has committed to a revised blade design with a modified cooling scheme and a different thermal barrier coating. Both changes require their own qualification campaigns, which is where most of the fourteen months goes. The core architecture is unaffected.

The company was careful to frame the finding as the test programme doing its job. That framing is technically correct and commercially necessary in equal measure.

Customers and compensation

Three launch customers are affected. Two have publicly said their induction plans can absorb the slip because their airframe deliveries were already sequenced conservatively. The third has a route launch tied to the aircraft and will need either a wet-lease bridge or a schedule change.

Compensation terms are confidential, as they always are. Historically, delays of this length are settled through a mix of credits against future spares and reduced-rate maintenance coverage in the first years of operation, rather than cash.

The wider pattern

This is the fourth major engine programme in a decade to lose more than a year to durability findings discovered late in testing. The common thread is not incompetence but ambition: each programme has pushed turbine entry temperatures higher to chase fuel burn, and materials science has not moved as fast as the thermodynamics.

Engineers inside two competing programmes, speaking on background, described the same trade-off. Every additional degree at the turbine inlet buys measurable fuel savings and costs an unpredictable amount of blade life. The certification schedule is where that uncertainty eventually shows up.
